Tasting Note February 2009 was very wet but March had half the average rainfall and April was fairly dry. That made conditions perfect for this Sauvignon which was harvested from our Awatere Valley vineyard in the second half of April.
Our Black Label Awatere Sauvignon Blanc is made from the best fruit out of our Marlborough vineyards. We picked two separate blocks to be blended together at a later stage. The earlier harvest imparts an herbaceous undertone with the later exhibiting prominent passionfruit and gooseberry characters. Not surprisingly therefore, passionfruit and gooseberry dominate the bouquet with undertones of nettle and herb.
The palate has plenty of fruit power and complexity. The fullness in the palate has been enhanced by maturing 30% in one and two year old French oak. This was to add another dimension but not dominate the wine.
A perfect match to most seafood dishes, especially pan-fried scallops.
May be cellared for up to 2 years for added complexity.
